Introduction

When Meghan Kenny started META Bodywork in Jersey City, she was not just opening another wellness business. She was bringing together years of personal experience, professional training, and a simple belief that true healing should focus on the whole person, not just the symptoms. Today, META Bodywork has grown from a one-person practice into a trusted spa in Jersey City, serving clients across the local community and beyond.

The journey began long before the business opened its doors. A life-changing yoga class at 21 and a later injury gave Meghan a deeper understanding of healing and recovery. These experiences inspired her to help people feel better, move with less pain, and live healthier, more active lives. At the time, Meghan had no idea those experiences would eventually lead her to create META Bodywork.

Where The Journey Began

The foundation of META Bodywork began with a single yoga class.

At age 21, Meghan attended her first yoga class and discovered a new way of understanding movement, recovery, and body awareness. What began as a personal practice soon turned into something bigger: a real curiosity about how the body responds to stress, activity, and everyday habits.

Yoga taught Meghan that wellness is never just one thing. Sleep, stress, movement, recovery, and mindset – it’s all connected. That idea stuck with her, and it is still the philosophy behind META Bodywork today.

Instead of seeing discomfort as something to just push through, she got curious about why pain shows up in the first place and how movement can help the body heal.

The Injury That Changed Everything

A personal injury became the real turning point.

In 2013, Meghan suffered a yoga-related injury and began looking for ways to recover. She found it difficult to get the relief she was looking for.

The experience showed Meghan how challenging it can be to live with pain. It also sparked her interest in understanding what causes pain, why some treatments work better than others, and how lasting recovery is possible.

The injury – often called “yoga butt” affects the hamstring tendon near the sitting bone and can be challenging to treat. As Meghan worked through her recovery, she realized that finding the right treatment was not always straightforward. That experience sparked a deeper interest in understanding pain, recovery, and what it takes to help people heal.

Many people enter the field of wellness through formal training, but META Bodywork started with Meghan’s own experiences.

Learning The Science of Healing

Professional training gave Meghan the tools to turn personal experience into professional expertise.

After her injury, Meghan enrolled at the Institute for Therapeutic Massage, where she studied Orthopedic Massage. Unlike a regular relaxation massage, orthopedic massage is about finding and fixing the specific issues causing pain or limiting movement.

This training gave her a much deeper understanding of anatomy, movement, and pain patterns. The experience also strengthened her belief that every client is different. No two clients come in with the same history, goals, or issues – so why treat them the same way?

That belief is still at the heart of how META Bodywork works today.

Building META Bodywork

In 2019, Meghan designed META Bodywork from the ground up, building the practice around three key areas: Body, Mind, and Soul.

Drawing from her background in massage therapy, yoga, meditation, nutrition, and personal development, Meghan had developed a clear vision for the type of wellness experience she wanted to create. She began building the concept that would become META Bodywork.

Most massage businesses start with a list of services.

META started with a belief: how your body feels affects everything else in your life.

The services came after that, not the other way around. That mindset helped shape a practice centered on Body, Mind, and Soul, creating an experience that feels intentional rather than transactional.

That’s why META feels like one connected idea, not just a menu of random treatments.

Evolving To Better Serve Clients

As the practice evolved, so did the services offered at META Bodywork.

After opening META Bodywork, Meghan continued listening to her clients. Not just to clients during sessions, but to the bigger patterns she saw as her client base grew.

Many clients were dealing with ongoing muscle tension, stiffness, and movement issues. This led META Bodywork to offer services like deep tissue massage to help reduce discomfort and support better mobility. Lymphatic drainage massage was added as clients managing post-surgical recovery and inflammation began seeking it out specifically.

Clients experiencing jaw tension, headaches, and facial discomfort sought specialized TMJ massage, while prenatal massage was offered to support and comfort expecting mothers.

The focus was never on offering as many services as possible. Instead, the goal was to provide treatments that met clients’ needs and helped them feel and function better every day.

Earning Trust in Jersey City

As the client base grew, word began to spread.

Over the years, META Bodywork has been featured by Well+Good, CNN, Parents, DailyOM, Cheddar News, and JC Upfront. These features helped introduce Meghan’s approach to wellness and bodywork to a wider audience beyond Jersey City.

The practice has also earned community recognition, including Best Massage in Jersey City 2024 & 2025 and Hoboken Girl Best of Hoboken Winner 2024 & 2025.

Awards and media mentions are nice milestones, but they all come down to one thing: trust.

Every client visit, every referral, every good experience – that is what really built the reputation META Bodywork has today.

The practice has grown over the years through a focus on learning, personalized care, and helping clients feel their best.

The Philosophy That Still Guides META Today

The mission behind META Bodywork remains as relevant today as it was when Meghan first imagined the practice.

What started with a yoga class, a hard recovery, and a wish to understand healing better has grown into a respected massage therapy spa in Jersey City serving the local community. Yet the core philosophy has remained remarkably consistent.

Those values are at the heart of META Bodywork and will continue to shape its future.

META was built around the belief that lasting wellness requires more than temporary relief.

The story behind META Bodywork continues with every client who walks through the door. If you would like to learn more about our approach to wellness or explore our services, we invite you to schedule a session with our team in Jersey City.
